Pleached or Espaliered trees

Pleached trees and espaliered trees are trees that have been trained to grow in a specific way, often with a narrow, upright growth habit.

  • Pleached trees are trees that have been trained to grow with a single, central stem that is clear of branches for a certain distance, typically around 1.5-1.8 meters (5-6 feet), before branching out. The branches are then trained to grow horizontally and are often pruned and shaped to create a flat plane. Pleached trees are often used as a living fence or as a decorative element in gardens and landscapes.

  • Espaliered trees are trees that have been trained to grow with a single, central stem that is clear of branches for a certain distance, typically around 1.5-1.8 meters (5-6 feet), before branching out. The branches are then trained to grow horizontally along a flat plane, often against a wall or trellis. Espaliered trees are often used to create a decorative element in gardens or to grow fruit in small spaces.

Both pleached trees and espaliered trees require careful training and pruning to maintain their shape, and they may require additional support, such as a trellis or stakes, to help them grow in the desired form.
