Carpinus betulus, also known as European hornbeam, is a popular choice for hedging due to its dense and bushy growth habit, which allows it to create a thick, formal-looking barrier.

The leaves of Carpinus betulus are bright green, oval-shaped, and serrated, and they turn yellow-orange in the fall before dropping. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, followed by small, winged nuts in the summer.

Carpinus betulus is relatively easy to grow and maintain, and it can tolerate a wide range of soil types and conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and regular watering, but it can also withstand periods of drought. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to promote dense growth and maintain the desired shape of the hedge.
